"the" Mrs. Astor

Another passing. The great Kitty Carlyle Hart's death puts another nail in the coffin of the New York of the last half of the 20th Century. Apart from her TV appearances which many of us remember, she was the epitome of an elegant and cultured New York that she seemed to rule for an eternity. Fortunately, she didn't have the troubles of her friend, Brooke Astor, and could be seen in photos attending benefits or arts functions until very recently. There won't be another like her.

She was one of those people you'd expect to be around forever. I remember her on what was it? To Tell The Truth? Horrible isn't it? I never saw her in any of her acting bits, but remember her from 1970s cheesy game shows...

She was not only an icon to those of us who, as kids, watched her on TV. She had started out in opera, went to movies, and married one of the most successful men in entertainment, Moss Hart. For years and years, she dominated the cultural arts scene of New York with an inherent sense of tack, style, and intelligence which will never be repeated or forgotten.

Yes, we always hoped she would be around forever.....

There isn't a week that goes by, that in witty reparte' I would say..."that's one down Ms. Kitty Carlyle". She will be missed and doubly so for those that knew her as you did darling. Hugs,
